    Hi John, another great restoration, thank you. I have an inquiry for you, i purchased a box of tools today at auction for $10, in the box was a hammer that i had never seen before. It has a ball on both sides like a double sided ball peen hammer. Name on side say Brades 1943 and a symbol. Tried looking it up in google images and closest thing i could find was what was called a Polishing Hammer. Have you seen one of these hammers before? Curious to know what they were used for. In my mind i first thought i could use it to shape then sheet metal with a former to create convex shapes.

    Nice job on the RAMSET hammer. I have tried many hammer brands, but I am unfamiliar with RAMSET, and I have many favorites. Snap-On dead blow series is a favorite. I own about 15 styles, sizes and variations. Estwing is another favorite. The long handled 22 oz. framers are my favorite Estwing version, especially the smooth faced version. Although I have probably purchased 40 (given most away to sons and grandsons) Estwing hammers, my absolute favorite is that first 22oz. Long handled framer. It was lost for a couple of years by one of my boys and subsequently found with the brush hog. Its twist and handle cuts coming out of the brush hog were significantly more impressive than your curved claw example. That hammer grip is now worn smooth and slick. My handle straightening effort was compromised by limited tooling on the day that I did my salvation in our 50T Dake. It still has a slight head list to one side and deep blade cut scars running parallel to the handle in the grip, but these have never affected its performance. Although I own newer versions of the same hammer, the crude resurrection I performed 30 plus years ago has kept it my framing favorite. If I was a framer, I suppose that I would have upgraded to to a higher end hammer brand, but I think that the Estwing is a fabulous low cost option for every serious DIYer. Arguably the steel Estwing hammer isn't kind to full-time user wrists and elbows, but my intermittent swinging hasn't caused me any recordable injury. I regard my Estwing as a battle scarred evidence of happily raising 5 sons and now 18 grandsons to embrace the trades. Some clever time under your Dake should save your twisted hammer, but I don't understand why the curved claw hammers are still made and purchased. I still own a few relics, but I don't recall when I purposely used one!

    How would you clean up a Lufkin steel ruler, no.1176, or any folding steel ruler

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter 20 годин тому

      Steel rules are such a challenge because they were high carbon steel and easily pitted- then engraved so if you remove the pits you remove letters and numbers. So far fiber wheel seems to clean them up nice if engraved, if printed we’re screwed! 😂👍

    John just over a month ago my girlfriend sat down on the front porch steps and put her hand on the railing(in the dark) and put her hand on a baby opossum. I was visiting my son in the hospital and she sent me a pic and said guess what we got. I kept him for 2 weeks and now my daughter has him. H e has a huge room to himself for quiet times and is awesome. I called him OPEE and if a girl OPAL both a play on "O" in Opossum.

      He doesnt like cat food,being a baby I was feeding him goats milk in a little kitten bottle then he went straight to grapes and cat food,which he wouldnt eat. He loves Broccoli,grapes,pears meal worms filet mignon ( I had a piece leftover and I cut it into real tiny pieces) Hates sweet potatoes. Half what the experts say he likes the other half he doesnt. He is so cool, loves his ears and head rubbed.His little tail and feet hanging on. He sleeps with a little "Lambchop" stuffed animal and a tiny blanket. Good luck if you get one.Here you have to apply and get a wild animal permit.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter День тому

      Brian- Most hammers will bend quite a bit before breaking because they are tempered that way. If the hammer breaks at the shaft it was too hard and not tempered correctly. Only the face of the hammer should be very hard, the rest should be somewhat flexible almost like spring steel. 😃👍

    Question if I may. When making the mineral oil/ petroleum jelly combo does it matter what brand I use? I was in target and bought a bottle of house brand mineral oil (says it’s a laxative) and a was about to pick up Vaseline but all they had was the house brand of PJ. Does it matter as in Heinz Ketchup vs all other imposters?
